How to get a free Phone Number for Incoming calls and make it work with Linksys Sunrocket Gizmo (VOIP) and land line telephone

DISCLAIMER: I'm no expert on VOIP. These are just the steps I did to make my phone work for an incoming call. The only reason I am posting here is because it is ridiculous to post this big message on multiple forums. Please do not eMail me coz I really don't know anything beyond what I have stated here.

Note: These are instructions specific to Linksys SPA2102-R Sunrocket Gizmo. But you can find equivalent instructions for the other 2 types of sunrocket Gizmos by googling around.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO UNLOCK Linksys SPA2102-R using the method listed below, please follow instructions at http://gizmopasswords.blogspot.com/2007/08/instructions-for-livecd.html

1) Goto http://gizmoproject.com/ . Download their client software, Install on your computer, Launch the application after install and create a free Gizmo Project account. Now login using the login/password you selected.

2) Click 'Edit' menu and select 'My Profile'. You will see a field SIP number which goes like 1747xxxxxxx@proxy01.sipphone.com. Note down the 1747xxxxxxx number. From here on I'll refer it as the 'SIP number'

3) Now you need to get a phone number that can forward calls to the SIP number you found in above step. There are multiple options

option a) Get a free phone number from http://www.grandcentral.com. They let you forward your assigned free phone number to a SIP number (http://blog.grandcentral.com/?p=72) . Right now they give numbers only on invitation. You can get grandcentral invites by searching on the internet or just buy an invite from ebay (they sell around 1$)!

option b) Get a free phone number from www.ipkall.com. They have only limited area codes though. IPKall forwards that number to the SIP number of your choice

option c) Get a area code 775 number from gizmoproject. http://gizmoproject.com/area775.html. Don't chose any of the paid options when you sign up. Just use the free option. This number will automatically forward calls to your 775 number to your SIP number.

Once you got your number following any of above 3 options and forwarded that number to your SIP number, login to the gizmo project desktop application and leave it running. Now make a call from your cellphone or someone elses phone to your free telephone number that you got by following any of above 3 options(NOT YOUR SIP NUMBER BUT YOUR FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER). Your desktop gizmo project application will popup the incoming call alert and you can talk ( PC Speaker and mic) to the caller.

4) Assuming your linksys Sunrocket Gizmo is powered and connected to your router and a working phone (as you used to except that now there is no service!) , follow below steps to customize the device to work with your SIP number

step 1) To enable admin access:
1. Dial * * * * on your phone
2. Enter 723646# when asked for option
3. Enter 78778839# when asked for password
4. Enter 1# when asked for value
5. Enter 1 to save the config

step 2)Enable access from WAN side too:
1. Dial * * * *
2. Enter 7932# when asked for option
3. Enter 78778839# when asked for password
4. Enter 1# when asked for value
5. Enter 1 to save the config

step 3)To know the exact URL link of your gizmo:
1. Dial * * * * on your phone
2. Enter 110# when asked for option
3. Note down the URL link which the phone echoes back to you

If the URL found in step 3 above is 192.168.x.x , accessthe URL http://192.168.x.x/admin/voice/advanced in your internet browser. Login using admin and 7UprUtew for user name and password respectively. You will be taken to a page with many menu options. Make below mentioned changes

change 1) In System Tab , there is a field 'Restricted Aceess Domains'. Add 'sipphone.com', proxy01.sipphone.com,stun01.sipphone.com there and click 'Submit All Changes'

change 2) In the provisioning tab, under configuration profile , remove the text in fields named a) Log Resync Request Msg:, b)Log Resync Success Msg: and c)Log Resync Failure Msg:.

change 3) In the provisioning tab, under configuration profile , Set 'Provision Enable' to 'No'.

change 4) In the provisioning tab, under firmware upgrade, set 'Upgrade Enable' to no. Click on click 'Submit All Changes' once done

change 5) In Line1 tab, under 'proxy and registration', set proxy and outbound proxy fields to 'proxy01.sipphone.com:5060'

change 5) In Line1 tab, under 'subscriber information', set the fields 'display name', 'auth id' and 'user ID' to your SIP Number. Set 'password' to your Gizmo project password.

LOGOUT OF THE GIZMO PROJECT DESKTOP APPLICATION. Now have someone call your free phone number and your phone connected to the Linksys Sunrocket Gizmo should ring. Pickup and talk to glory!

If you want outgoing calls also, buy 'call out' minutes from Gizmo Project website. You will then be able to dial any number from your regular land line connected to the Linksys Sunrocket Gizmo.

Screen Shots of Linksys SPA2102 Configuration

Please note that I've not included Line2 and User2 under Voice tab coz these are not being used and are disabled.

Also please note that "Restricted Access Domains" field under "System Configuration" section of Voice>>System menu has a length that makes it difficult to fit on one page. So there are two screen shots and pls make sure this field is filled in after looking at both of them. Ofcourse we don't need entries like 'sunrocket.com' which I have up there. But I didn't bother to remove it once I saw that adding gizmo servers to the existing entries got my system up and running.
